Frequently Asked Questions

Chinese Reading — Your Questions Answered

Do you support Simplified and Traditional Chinese?

Yes. Nihao Story supports both Simplified and Traditional Chinese with Mandarin pronunciation, so you can choose the script that best fits your family.

Do you include pinyin?

Yes. Every Chinese character has pinyin displayed above it so your child (and you) can follow along with pronunciation, even if you can't read the characters yet.

Is this for parents who speak Chinese but can't read it?

Exactly. If you grew up speaking Mandarin at home but never learned to read, Nihao Story bridges that gap. The audio + pinyin + English toggle means you can read together without being fluent yourself.

What ages is this designed for?

Nihao Story is designed for children ages 0–10. Stories are sorted by reading level, from picture books for toddlers to longer stories for older kids.

What do Levels 1, 2, and 3 mean?

Story levels help you choose the right reading fit for your child. Level 1: Bilingual Foundations, ages 0-2, uses picture-heavy stories, minimal text, basic vocabulary, and familiar routines. Level 2: Bilingual Concept Building, ages 2-4, adds simple sentences, predictable repetition, and basic beginning-middle-end stories. Level 3: Early Bilingual Reading, ages 4-6, uses more balanced text and pictures, simple storylines, early sight words, and 3-8 lines per page.

Can my child learn to read characters, not just hear them?

Yes. Every story shows the Chinese characters alongside pinyin. Over time, kids naturally start recognizing characters through repeated exposure — no flashcards needed.

How is this different from a Chinese tutor or class?

Nihao Story is designed for daily practice at home. 10 minutes at bedtime. It complements classes but doesn't replace them. Think of it as the reading habit that makes everything else stick.
